Somaiya Vidyavihar students develop "App - HELP FLARE" to deal with ongoing challenges during COVID-19
'HELP FLARE' helps in the identification of the areas that need essentials, also provide data on the kind of essentials required
Mumbai 22 April 2020: The current COVID-19 pandemic has taken the world by storm, and one of the measures taken by the Government of India was ordering a nationwide lockdown to combat the situation to reduce the spread of the disease. This, however, resulted in affecting thousands of wage workers, whose only source of income was their wages. These daily wage workers depend on their everyday earnings for food and other necessities which have come to a halt due to the lockdown. There are several bodies and individuals such as the Central Government, the State Government, Corporations, Local Authorities, NGOs and other social help groups who are coming forward to help, by providing essentials such as food, water, clothing and masks to the affected people.
One of the many challenges that they face is the identification of the location that needs help and what specific kind of essentials are required. To solve this problem, students of K J Somaiya Institute of Engineering and Information Technology, (KJSIEIT) Sion, Mumbai developed "App - HELP FLARE" under the guidance of faculty members. Help Flare is an app that brings attention to the affected people and also provides data on the essentials needed to groups working to help them.
Principal Dr. Suresh Ukarande said " We are proud of our students, the first things after the lockdown was announced, all they did was brainstorming to come up with a solution as to in which way they can contribute. They have worked tirelessly with the help of their faculty and successfully come up with this app which works like an excellent solution to deal with one of the many challenges that we face during the current pandemic. This shows that above academic excellence they have once again demonstrated our founder's vision of 'Giving back to society'”.
Students Idrees Dargahwala, Burhanuddin Udaipurwala and Shivam Bhanushali said "We are so glad that we could apply the academic skills that we learnt in our classroom to create something that can help the current situation. Most individuals want to help in some way or the other, here anyone who wants to help can see the affected areas on the map and provide help.
To cater to a large audience, the app has been made available in both languages, English and Hindi. However, the highlight of the app is that it will not only show what area needs the essential supplies but also identifies what kind of essentials are needed, whether it is food, clothing or masks".
